Stanford football gets new interim leader: Frank Reich takes helm after Troy Taylor’s firing | NFL News

In a bold move to reset its football program, Stanford University has turned to veteran coach Frank Reich to steer the Cardinal through the 2025 season. Reich, best known for his leadership in the NFL, has been hired on an interim basis following the firing of Troy Taylor. This decision marks a new chapter for Stanford football as the university eyes a national search after the upcoming season.
Frank Reich: A fresh start for Stanford football
Reich, who spent over 17 years in the NFL as both an assistant and head coach, takes the reins of the Cardinal with the aim of revitalizing a program in need of a fresh perspective. Though this is his first foray into collegiate coaching, Reich’s extensive experience, including a successful stint with the Indianapolis Colts, makes him an intriguing choice for Stanford. He earned his first head coaching role in 2018 with the Colts and led the team to a 40-33-1 record over five seasons, guiding them to three winning seasons and two playoff appearances.
Stanford’s decision to bring Reich on board comes amid turmoil surrounding former head coach Troy Taylor. The university parted ways with Taylor following a misconduct investigation, which revealed mistreatment of female staffers. Stanford’s General Manager, Andrew Luck, who coached under Reich in Indianapolis, praised the new hire, noting Reich’s ability to inspire both on and off the field. “Frank is a teacher, a winner and a coach of the highest caliber,” Luck stated.
As part of the transition, Nate Byham, Stanford’s tight ends coach, will take on the role of offensive coordinator. Byham, who has been with the team for three seasons, is expected to help strengthen the Cardinal’s offensive strategy under Reich’s leadership.
Frank Reich and Andrew Luck reunite at Stanford
This new chapter for Stanford football is also a reunion of sorts for Reich and Luck, whose relationship dates back to their time together with the Colts. Reich was Luck’s head coach during his final season in 2018, when the quarterback made a spectacular comeback after missing the previous year with an injury. Their time together was short but impactful, with Luck earning Comeback Player of the Year honors that season.

Now, with Reich leading Stanford, the Cardinal hope to benefit from his proven leadership and mentorship. Reich’s task is clear: to inspire the team, build on its strengths, and return Stanford to its competitive best in the world of college football. With Reich at the helm, the program is poised for a fresh start, focused on success both on and off the field.
