Salem woman held for duping disabled youth of Rs 5 lakh by promising govt job

SALEM: A 39-year-old woman was arrested on Saturday for cheating a disabled youth of Rs 5 lakh by promising to get him a govt job with the help of deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.
The Shevapet police identified the arrested woman as Vidhya Raj of Shevapet. According to a police officer, Vidhya was held based on a complaint lodged by A Aravind, 22, of Ariyalur district on Jan 12.
“Vidhya told Aravind that she personally knew Udhayanidhi Stalin and that she would arrange him the job of an assistant at the panchayat union office at Chinnasalem in Kallakurichi district with the deputy chief minister’s help. Sher also took Rs 5 lakh from Aravind in 2024 for securing the govt job,” the officer said.
When Vidhya failed to secure the promised govt job, the officer said, Aravind asked her to return the amount she accepted from him. “However, Vidhya didn’t respond to him properly. Based on Aravind’s complaint, we conducted a probe and found that Vidhya had cheated him of Rs 5 lakh by promising a govt job. We registered a first information report on Friday and arrested her today (Saturday).”
Vidhya was produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded her in judicial custody. Later, she was lodged in the Salem Central Prison.
