NEW DELHI: Tennis star Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the Roland Garros final after Lorenzo Musetti retired due to a thigh injury during their semi-final match on Friday. The score was 4-6, 7-6(7/3), 6-0, 2-0 in favour of the Spaniard when Musetti withdrew after two hours and 25 minutes of play on Court Philippe Chatrier.Alcaraz, the second seed, will face either Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday. Reflecting on his journey, Alcaraz stated, “It’s been three intense weeks and now I have one step to make. I’ll give everything on Sunday, I’ve been playing great tennis this tournament.”The 22-year-old Spaniard now holds a 6-1 lead over Musetti in their head-to-head encounters, having won all three of their clay-court matches this season, including victories in Monte Carlo and the Italian Open.Musetti took the first set, but Alcaraz fought back, winning the second set in a tie-break and dominating the third set. Musetti received treatment on his thigh during the third set but continued to struggle, eventually retiring in the fourth set.
Despite the unfortunate end, Musetti had an impressive clay-court season, reaching the semi-finals in three Masters-level tournaments and Roland Garros. Alcaraz expressed sympathy, saying, “It’s never great to go through or win a match when it’s like this. He’s done an incredible clay season. I wish him all the best, a quick recovery and that he’ll be back soon.”
