Residents seek a clean Yamuna, riverfront, write to UP deputy CM

Noida: Members of the District Development Residents Welfare Association (DDRWA) wrote to the deputy chief minister, urging that officials organise a cleaning drive for the stretch of the river that flows in Noida. Citing sustained neglect and sewage disposal in the river, residents have also demanded the development of a riverfront in the city.
Officials in the national capital have announced plans for an initiative to clean and develop the riverfront in Delhi following the recent elections. Residents in the city took inspiration from the project and raised demands for similar work to be conducted in the city as well.
The Yamuna river stretches roughly 23km along Noida. Much like the part of the river that flows through the capital, the stretch of Yamuna located in Noida is also severely polluted, largely due to the wastewater being discharged into the river.
“Water from the city’s drains and sewers is being released into the Yamuna river, due to which the river has started looking like a dirty drain. Due to this contamination of the river, Noida has also faced serious problems of poor quality water,” said NP Singh, president of the DDRWA.
Singh wrote to deputy chief minister Brijesh Pathak and raised demands for a cleaning drive for the stretch of Yamuna that falls on the Noida side, along with the development of a riverfront in Noida along the lines of Delhi.
Ranpal Awana, legal advisor to DDRWA, further added that a clean river will also help reduce the spurt of diseases which have emerged due to water contamination in the city.
On Sunday, over 20 volunteers of the YSS Foundation, a local NGO, continued its weekly drive to clean the Yamuna riverbed. The volunteers cleaned the riverside near the Sector 94 ghat and picked up trash such as polythene bags, plastic bottles, disposables, etc, from the area.
