NEW DELHI: At least two labourers died and five others are feared trapped after a portion of soil caved in during a pipeline excavation near Jangi ka Nagla village in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur on Sunday morning, police said. According to officials, the incident occurred when a group of workers was filling a 10-foot-deep trench dug for laying a pipeline. Suddenly, the soil collapsed, burying 12 labourers under the debris. Hearing cries for help, fellow workers and project staff began rescue attempts, but the depth of the trench and the weight of the soil hampered immediate efforts. The district administration, police, and disaster management teams rushed to the spot and deployed earthmovers to speed up the rescue. So far, seven workers have been pulled out, two of whom — Ankul (22) and Vimla Devi (45) — were declared dead. The other five were admitted to the district hospital for treatment. Efforts are on to rescue the remaining five trapped workers, officials said.
