Bhubaneswar: The Puri Jagannath Temple is set to undergo a transformative visual enhancement with the introduction of modern lighting techniques. The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has decided to illuminate the temple’s premises and sub-shrines, promising a breathtaking spectacle for devotees at night.“We have named it the ‘heritage illumination project’. It aims to accentuate the temple’s intricate carvings and majestic architecture, creating a mesmerising visual experience after sunset,” SJTA’s chief administrator Arabinda Kumar Padhee said. The project is awaiting approval from the temple managing committee, following the submission of a detailed project report by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Earlier, ASI implemented a facade lighting facility at the shrine.“We have received the project report from ASI’s empanelled consultant. The report was initially approved by our technical and cultural sub-committee. It will subsequently be placed before the managing committee for final approval,” Padhee said. SJTA officials stated they will work closely with the ASI to ensure that the project adheres to all heritage conservation guidelines.The proposed lighting project is expected to employ state-of-the-art technology, ensuring energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact. The lighting design will be carefully curated to complement the temple’s historical and cultural significance, preserving its sanctity while enhancing its visual appeal.Expressing enthusiasm about the project, Padhee said that advanced lighting techniques and fixtures will be employed to accentuate the architectural values and textures of the main temple, sub-shrines, Ananda Bazar and Meghanada Pacheri (outer wall). Artistic integration of light will play a crucial role in creating atmosphere and mood.“While the footfall of devotees significantly went up since the beautification of the shrine’s surroundings under the Shree Mandira Parikrama project in Jan 2024, the proposed heritage illumination project will add value. It will allow devotees to appreciate the temple’s grandeur in the evening,” said servitor Jogendra Dasmohapatra.Residents and business owners have welcomed the initiative, anticipating a boost in tourism and economic activity. “The illumination project will undoubtedly draw more visitors, especially during the evening hours, providing a significant boost to local businesses,” said Ramesh Das, a shopowner near the temple.
