Porvorim faces water shortage after pipeline breaks down

Panaji: The PWD announced on Saturday that the Porvorim area would receive restricted water supply on Sunday due to the breakdown of the WRD’s 1,200-mm major pipeline at Duler, Mapusa. The pipeline supplies raw water to the 15MLD Porvorim water treatment plant.Sources said that the pipeline broke down on Friday evening, leading to the wastage of a large quantity of water. Supply was consequently stopped to carry out repairs. Officials said that the repairs were completed on Saturday and that water supply to the plant was expected to resume on Sunday. However, it will take some time for raw water to be treated at the plant at Porvorim before supply to consumers is normalised.Porvorim residents who usually receive water during the evenings said supply was cut off on Friday itself. Water tankers were seen frequenting residential areas. This water supply shortage comes during the peak tourism season for an urbanised locality like Porvorim, which has a number of commercial establishments, including hotels, besides being a high-density residential area.
