BAREILLY: The Cantonment Board on Wednesday carried out an anti-encroachment drive in the Bareilly Cantonment area, demolishing over 100 “temporary structures” built along the roadside, said officials.The drive was launched early in the morning amid heavy police deployment to prevent any confrontation. “These structures were built illegally and encroached on govt land, leading to traffic congestion,” Dr Tanu Jain, CEO of the Bareilly Cantonment Board, told TOI.Officials said a survey conducted earlier had identified more than 500 encroachments in the area. An initial phase of the demolition campaign was carried out in June, but operations were paused following an administrative transfer.After taking charge, Dr Jain ordered the resumption of the campaign. “The drive will continue, and no illegal construction will be spared,” she said. Local residents said the illegal structures included roadside huts, shops, and even toilets that had narrowed the roads and caused inconvenience to commuters.
