NEW DELHI: Gaganpreet Makkad, who was driving the BMW involved in a crash that killed Navjot Singh, a deputy secretary in the Finance Ministry, failed to secure bail from a Delhi court on Wednesday. As the court extended her judicial custody, she will remain in jail until at least Saturday.Makkad, arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, filed a bail application on Tuesday, arguing that there was no intent or negligence on her part. Her petition said custodial interrogation was unnecessary as she had cooperated with the investigation, was not a flight risk, and was unlikely to tamper with evidence. The court has issued a notice to the prosecution and directed Tihar jail authorities to provide her with medical care. Police confirmed her blood samples tested negative for alcohol. Singh, 57, was killed and his wife Sandeep Kaur seriously injured when the BMW hit their two-wheeler on Ring Road near Delhi Cantt Metro Station on Sunday. The couple was returning home from a gurudwara. After the crash, Makkad drove them to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, 22km from the accident site, instead of a nearby facility. Police later found the hospital is run by her relatives. Following a post-mortem, Singh’s body was taken to a Dwarka hospital where his wife is admitted. Witnesses said she broke down in tears when shown his body one last time. Police are now corroborating the statement of Makkad’s husband, Parikshit, who said he was unaware of how the incident occurred and only learnt of it after his wife called to say she was taking the victims to hospital.
