Nine children rescued from private shelter home near Coimbatore | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Nine children were rescued from a private shelter home near Kovilpalayam in Coimbatore district on Saturday after a video of the in-charge of the facility beating an eight-year-old boy with a belt went viral. On Thursday, S Selvaraj, 58, in-charge of Grace Happy Home located at Kottaipalayam, was arrested by the Kovilpalayam police for beating and harassing the boy. Following this, the district child welfare committee and the district child protection unit conducted an inspection at the home.Since the home lacked basic facilities, the authorities rescued the children staying there. Of the nine children rescued, four were admitted to a shelter home at Annur, three to a shelter home at Mettupalayam and two were handed over to their relatives.The authorities have sent a circular to other private shelter homes in the district stating that severe action would be taken if children were harassed or beaten by the in-charge or the staff members.
