Daltonganj: Students and faculty members of professional courses at the Professional Studies Institute of the three-storey Nilamber Pitamber University (NPU) here have been confronted with a peculiar problem as they walk into their classes daily — pigeons and their droppings — making it even difficult for the cleaning staff to sanitise regularly.Numerous pigeons take shelter on the campus, turning it into a filthy area of bird droppings every morning.
A doctor at MMCH here said, “Pigeon droppings are a health hazard as they carry fungi and bacteria. Respiratory infections can happen here.”Health experts also noted that cleaning pigeon droppings has been a significant challenge, as the cleaning staff often lack protective gloves and masks.The Professional Studies Institute building came into existence over one and a half years ago. NPU vice-chancellor Dinesh Kumar Singh has been instrumental in running different professional courses in various constituent colleges of the university under one roof.“It is for effective monitoring of the professional studies,” the VC said and admitted that despite the footfall of the students, pigeons have refused to leave their dwellings in the institute.S K Pandey, the dean of student welfare, said that it has been an arduous task to keep all three floors of the institute free from pigeon droppings. “Our men keep cleaning,” he said.Asked how they plan to address the problem, the VC added, “We have asked the builders to plug open spaces or make some slopes so that the pigeons are discouraged from entering the campus.
