The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly considering a major shake-up this summer, with Austin Reaves potentially being part of a blockbuster trade for Memphis Grizzlies star Desmond Bane. The Lakers have struggled offensively in the absence of LeBron James, who is sidelined with a groin injury. This has sparked speculation about the team’s future moves, particularly involving Reaves, who has underperformed in recent games.
Austin Reaves, who has been a breakout player this season, has seen a dip in his production, averaging just 16.5 points on a poor 30.8% shooting over his last two games. This slump has raised questions about his consistency and whether he can be relied upon as a secondary scorer behind Luka Doncic, who has been carrying the offensive load with 28.0 points and 7.5 assists per game in James’ absence. Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka may view this as an opportunity to explore trade options, with Desmond Bane emerging as a prime target.
Desmond Bane, a 26-year-old shooting guard, has been a standout for the Grizzlies this season, averaging 18.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists while shooting an efficient 56.2% from the field. Bane could be the ideal complement to Doncic and James majorly because of his three-point shooting. His five-year, $197 million contract, which runs through 2029, makes him a valuable long-term asset for any team.

A potential trade package could include Austin Reaves, Jarred Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent, and first-round draft capital in exchange for Bane. While parting with Reaves would be difficult for the Los Angeles Lakers, the addition of Bane could significantly bolster their backcourt. His ability to create his own shot and defend at a high level (112 defensive rating per 100 possessions) would address two critical needs for the Lakers, especially as they aim to remain competitive in the Western Conference.
The Grizzlies, currently the No. 4 seed in the West, might also consider a roster overhaul if they face another early playoff exit. Acquiring Austin Reaves and additional assets could provide them with flexibility and youth to build around Ja Morant.
