Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has shared his thoughts on coaching roles and why MS Dhoni might not pursue a coaching position, amid discussions about Gautam Gambhir‘s coaching performance.MS Dhoni served as the mentor for the Indian cricket team during the T20 World Cup in 2021.The Indian cricket team has shown varying results under the leadership of head coach Gautam Gambhir. Currently, Dhoni is unavailable for any coaching positions as he continues his playing career with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

I don’t think he is interested. Coaching is a difficult job. Coaching keeps you as busy as you were when playing and sometimes even more than that,” Chopra said.“You have a family and you say that you have done the same thing your entire life, you have lived your life out of a suitcase and you don’t want to do that job now.“That is why a lot of players don’t get into coaching and even if they do, it’s a two-month IPL stint. However, if you become a full-time Indian head coach, it’s a commitment of 10 months a year.”Chopra suggested that Dhoni might consider coaching if he wishes to contribute back to Indian cricket.Dhoni, who led Chennai Super Kings as stand-in captain in IPL 2025 in the absence of injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, has acknowledged team deficiencies after the team’s first-ever last-place finish.Chennai Super Kings face significant challenges in building a competitive team ahead of IPL 2026, while most other teams have established their core groups.
