Mizoram completes 80% biometric enrolment of refugees from Myanmar

Aizawl: District administrations across 11 Mizoram districts have completed nearly 80% of biometric enrolment of over 30,000 refugees from Myanmar currently sheltering in the state, officials from the home department said on Sunday.As of Friday, 30,438 Myanmar refugees were officially recorded in Mizoram, of whom 24,191 (79.41%) have been enrolled.Biometric enrolment has been fully completed in Aizawl, Lunglei, and Serchhip districts, where the process for refugees from Bangladesh has also been concluded.North-eastern Khawzawl district has completed 94.19% of the enrolment process, while Kolasib district on Assam border and Mamit district on Tripura-Bangladesh border have completed 93.55% and 90.58%, respectively.In Champhai district, which hosts the largest number of Myanmar refugees (13,098), 79.31% of enrolment has been completed so far.Meanwhile, Lawngtlai district, which shelters the second-largest group of Myanmar refugees and the highest number of refugees from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts, has achieved only 53.33% enrolment. The district, which hosts 2,042 Bangladesh refugees, is yet to begin biometric registration for them.The enrolment campaign, launched in late July last year, has continued despite technical glitches and heavy monsoon conditions that slowed progress.
