Seven months have passed since the tragic loss of Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau, two beloved NHL brothers who were taken too soon in a devastating accident. Their untimely passing left a void in the hockey world and their families, but their loved ones continue to keep their memory alive in the most meaningful way—through the John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation.

Matthew and Johnny weren’t just stars on the ice; they were also known for their generosity and kindness. Now, their wives, Madeline and Meredith, are ensuring that their legacy of compassion lives on. As co-presidents of the foundation, they aim to expand youth hockey opportunities and support families affected by drunk driving—a cause painfully close to their hearts.
In a heartfelt statement, they shared the foundation’s mission, “Your support will promote and expand youth ice hockey opportunities, help hockey families facing tragedies, as well as help families that are unfortunately also affected by drunk driving, like ours.”
The foundation’s work is especially poignant considering the brothers’ tragic passing on August 29, when a drunk driver struck and killed them while they were biking in Salem County. They had been set to serve as groomsmen in their sister’s wedding the next day, but fate took a devastating turn.

Madeline Gaudreau’s heartfelt tribute

In the months following the tragedy, both Madeline and Meredith have used their platforms to honor their late husbands. Recently, Madeline reshared the foundation’s announcement on Instagram, writing, “All for you guys,” reinforcing her unwavering love and dedication.
Last year, shortly after Matthew’s passing, Madeline penned a heartbreaking farewell, “I have no words. I just miss you. I don’t know my life without you. I have never experienced a pain like this. I am so blessed you chose me to be your wife… I know you are watching down in just as much pain as I am looking up. I will keep going for you and our son. I love you so much, Matthew.”
Beyond the foundation, Meredith partnered with the Columbus Blue Jackets and LineChangeCo to release a limited-edition crewneck inspired by the team’s third jersey. Proceeds from the sales will go toward the foundation, further amplifying its mission.
