Man tries to stop drunk neighbour from jumping into well near Tirupur; both drown | Coimbatore News

TIRUPUR: A man who tried to stop a drunk man from jumping into a well drowned along with the latter near Avinashi in Tirupur district on Friday night.The deceased have been identified as Praveen Raj, 36, of Sundakkampalayam and his neighbour Naveen Kumar, 38, Police said Naveen frequently got into arguments with his family members after consuming alcohol. On Friday night, he returned home in a cab. In an inebriated condition, he demanded money from his mother to pay the cab fare. During the quarrel, he threatened to end his life by jumping into a well. Moments later, he attempted to leap into a nearby well that is around 140 feet deep.Alarmed, his mother sought the help of Praveen. Praveen tried to pull Naveen to safety. But both fell into the well and drowned.Fire and rescue services personnel retrieved the body of Praveen on Saturday. However, Naveen’ body could not be recovered until Saturday evening as the well contained nearly 100 feet of water, police said.The Avinashi police registered a case.
