Maid arrested for stealing Rs 8.70 lakh from doctor’s house in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: The Saravanampatti investigation wing police have arrested a maid for stealing Rs 8.70 lakh from the house of a doctor in Ganapathy.
The arrested maid has been identified as P Rakkammal, 38, of Ramalingapuram in Virudhunagar district.
Police said Rakkammal had registered her name with a Coimbatore-based home care private agency that sends maids to households in need of them. Four months ago, the woman was sent to the house of Dr VC Vivin Prasath, 32, of Airforce Naval Housing Enclave in Ganapathy. Rakkammal worked in the doctor’s house as a maid and as a caretaker of his son.
Around 7.30 pm on April 15, Dr Vivin Prasath and his wife were counting money kept in a bag in a bedroom cupboard. He found Rs 8.70 lakh missing from the bag. They inquired with the maid, who replied that she was not aware of the missing amount.
The doctor lodged a complaint with the Saravanampatti investigation wing police inspector Nirmala Devi, who conducted an inquiry with the woman. The police discovered that the maid had stolen the amount from the bag and deposited around 8.50 lakh in some bank accounts. She repaid her loans through her relatives by utilising the amount.
The police registered a case against the maid and arrested her on Wednesday night. They seized Rs 22,000 in cash from her. She was remanded in judicial custody and lodged in the special prison for women on the Coimbatore Central Prison premises.
