Supreme Court ruling reinforces TET requirement
This year’s Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test process gains further significance following a recent Supreme Court ruling. The Court has clarified that qualifying the Teacher Eligibility Test is mandatory not only for aspiring teachers but also for in-service teachers who wish to be considered for promotions. However, the ruling includes certain exemptions. Teachers who were appointed before the implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act and have less than five years of service remaining are exempt from this requirement. Additionally, teachers employed in minority institutions are exempt until a larger bench of the Supreme Court reaches a final decision on whether the provisions of the Right to Education Act apply to such institutions.According to state legislative authorities, an estimated 70 to 75% of teachers currently employed in Maharashtra will need to clear the TET within the next two years. Failing to meet this requirement within the stipulated time may result in termination. Nonetheless, those whose total service period meets the necessary norms will still remain eligible for retirement benefits.
