‘Madam’ in Rs 300cr scam: ED names IAS officer’s wife

MUMBAI: The ED has named Bharti Pawar (49), wife of IAS officer and former Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) commissioner Anil Pawar, as an accused in the chargesheet it has filed in the money laundering case linked to the construction of illegal buildings in the Vasai-Virar belt, report Rebecca Samervel & Vijay V Singh.Stating that her code name in the ‘internal cash delivery sheets’ for bribes was ‘Madam’, the ED has said she acted as a front for her husband “to infuse proceeds of crime of Rs 169.6 crore into the legal mainstream, projecting it as untainted.” This was done by way of investments and purchase of properties, the agency has said. Investments were made in bullion and jewellery as well as for “living (an) ultra-luxurious life,” the ED has said.
