‘Lived on cockroaches, birds, turtle’: Peru fisherman, saved after 94 days at sea, reveals

A Peruvian fisherman was found alive after drifting at sea for 94 days, a navy official said, as he was discharged from hospital. Maximo Napa, 61, was rescued in his small boat on Tuesday after being spotted by an Ecuadoran vessel. He said in a tearful interview he survived at sea by eating cockroaches, birds and a turtle. “I didn’t want to die, for my mother. I have a two-month-old granddaughter I clung to that,” Napa said.
He had set sail on Dec 7 but bad weather and current caused him to lose course. His boat, which had no radio beacon, ended up on high seas.
Taiwan race organisers sorry for trophy shaped like a Chinese machine gun
Organisers of a marathon in Taiwan apologised on Sunday after giving out prizes in the shape of a golden Chinese machine gun. Legislator Hsu Chi-chieh, of the governing Democratic Progressive party that favours independence from China, said the use of the image of Chinese QBZ-95 was an unintentional mistake. Those given the trophies would be given the option to choose a different one. Fengshan Road Running Association said a weapon had been selected because of this year race’s affiliation with military, but said nothing as to why a weapon in current use with China’s forces was chosen.
Blackout leaves Panama in darkness:
Panama was scrambling to restore power Sunday after a night-time blackout plunged the Central American country into darkness. The power cut, which struck shortly before midnight, was caused by damage to a private generator. Access to drinking water was also suspended due to the outage. Meanwhile, millions of Cubans were without electricity for a second night Saturday after a widespread blackout hit the island, the 4th in less than 6 months.
