Indian Air Force civil engineer shot dead at home in UP

PRAYAGRAJ: An Indian Air Force (IAF) civil engineer was shot dead while sleeping at his official residence in the cantonment area of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday morning, police said.
According to news agency PTI, Puramufti Station House Officer (SHO) Manoj Singh stated that an unidentified assailant fired at the victim through a window while he was asleep.
The deceased, identified as SN Mishra (51), sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. He was immediately rushed to the Army hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, the SHO confirmed. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Mishra is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. Police said legal proceedings would be initiated once a formal complaint is filed by the family.
Army Officer Found Dead in Ranchi
In a separate incident, a 49-year-old lieutenant colonel posted at the Dipatoli cantonment in Ranchi was found dead in the parking area of the Khelgaon housing complex on Tuesday.
The officer, identified as Diwarkar Singh, hailed from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district and had been stationed in Ranchi since 2019. Police said Singh and his family had been living in the housing complex for the past year. His family members claimed that he had been under work-related stress in recent months.
Before his Ranchi posting, Singh had served in Siliguri, West Bengal.
A defence ministry spokesperson in Delhi told TOI over the phone that an internal investigation into the incident had been initiated but declined to comment on the family’s allegations regarding Singh’s work pressure.
Singh’s body was discovered early Tuesday morning by joggers, who alerted the police. A preliminary investigation suggested that the officer died after falling from a building in the complex, police said.
Khelgaon police station in-charge Chandra Shekhar Singh told TOI that residents found Singh’s body in the parking lot around 6:30 am and informed the police. “It is not yet confirmed whether the Army officer died by suicide or if it is a case of murder. The post-mortem examination has been conducted, and we can comment on the cause of death only after receiving the report. However, we are investigating the matter from every possible angle,” he said.
Family members suggested that Singh may have accidentally fallen from the terrace, as he reportedly went up there around midnight on Tuesday while the rest of the family was asleep. Singh lived in the complex with his wife and daughter, and his father-in-law was also in Ranchi on the day of the incident.
