Panaji: Regional transport offices (RTOs) across Goa have been witnessing serpentine queues as motorists rushed to pay pending traffic challans. This surge followed a warning from the transport authorities, asking them to clear all outstanding fines within seven days.“The crowd started on Thursday after the ministry of road transport and highways sent out messages to traffic violators that pending challans have to be compounded and that strict action will be taken against violators for non-payment,” a senior transport official said.Once a show-cause notice is served, motorists are required to visit the RTO to settle the dues. The surge in people has overwhelmed some offices, which are already facing a shortage of staff. “It has been difficult to complete the task quickly due to limited hands on deck. We are trying to accommodate as many pending fines as we can within working hours,” the official said.
