Goa Road Safety Council Accelerates Traffic Camera Implementation to Curb Accidents | Goa News

Panaji: The state road safety council meeting held on Monday called for accelerated implementation of multiple road safety measures in Goa, including faster rollout of camera-based challaning, safety audits of highways and pedestrian infrastructure, and a phased introduction of helmets for pillion riders, officials said following recent deliberations of the council.The discussions focused on fast-tracking the camera-based challaning system, with all operations to be jointly handled by Beltech Engineering and directorate of transport.The system, which faced repeated delays, is expected to play a crucial role in enforcing traffic violations through automated detection, especially on high-risk and high-traffic corridors.The council also stressed the need for the public works department (national highways wing) to act urgently on recommendations already made in road safety audit reports.These audits identified engineering and design flaws contributing to accidents, but many corrective measures remain pending. Special attention will be given to pedestrian subways at Bambolim, Verna, Nuvem and Navelim.Authorities were directed to inspect these subways to identify structural, lighting and accessibility improvements aimed at increasing public usage.The council also announced that National Road Safety Month will be observed in Jan, with awareness drives, enforcement campaigns and coordination between departments to reduce road accidents and fatalities.The council advised all district road safety committees to use a standardised handbook while preparing their district road safety action plans.The move is aimed at ensuring uniformity, data-driven planning and accountability at the district level by tightening traffic monitoring mechanisms
