GMC to expedite Animal Birth Control Centre: Commissioner Srinivasulu | Vijayawada News

GUNTUR: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) is speeding up the establishment of a full-fledged Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre on Ponnur Road to carry out scientific sterilisation of street dogs, in line with recent Supreme Court directions. Municipal Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu said the facility is being developed to control the stray dog population and reduce inconvenience to residents. He chaired an ABC Committee meeting at his chamber.Speaking at the meeting, the Commissioner said the Supreme Court had recently issued detailed guidelines on the management of stray animals across the country. In accordance with these guidelines, the GMC is preparing to take up systematic sterilisation operations to check the growing street dog population. He noted that the corporation receives several complaints daily regarding stray dog nuisance in different parts of the city, making urgent action necessary.Srinivasulu said clear instructions had been given to the engineering wing to fast-track construction of the ABC centre at Ponnur Road so that sterilisation activities can begin as soon as possible. “To strengthen veterinary infrastructure, we are writing to the animal husbandry department requesting a dedicated veterinary assistant surgeon for Guntur city to support the ABC programme,” he said.He appealed to animal welfare organisations and dog lovers to cooperate with the GMC in implementing the sterilisation drive. Their support, he said, would help address public grievances while ensuring humane treatment of animals. Public participation is crucial, he stressed, to balance community safety and animal welfare.The Commissioner reiterated that the GMC is committed to scientific and humane methods for managing stray dogs. He said the upcoming ABC centre will have proper equipment, trained staff and standard operating procedures to ensure welfare-friendly sterilisation, vaccination and post-operative care. The administration aims to reduce the stray dog population in a phased manner while improving public safety across Guntur.Animal husbandry department joint director Satyanarayana, AD Chakravarthi, VAS Eshwar Reddy, GMC’s CMOH Dr P Shanti Kala, MHO Dr Lakshminarayana, committee member Pradeep Jain and public health superintendent Poleshwara Rao attended the meeting. The committee reviewed current field conditions, the rising number of stray dog complaints and action points for implementing the mandated sterilisation protocols.
