Fire breaks out in Coimbatore automobile spare parts shop
According to fire and rescue department personnel, the shop contained a welding machine, batteries and other oil-like substances, which may be the reason for the fire spreading rapidly.

COIMBATORE: A fire broke out in an automobile spare parts shop in a three-storey building on the Patel Road near Gandhipuram here on Friday evening. Efforts were on to extinguish the blaze even three hours after it broke out. The fire is said to have started during a welding process in the shop around 4pm. Workers in the shop and others tried to put out the fire with water. However, the fire spread rapidly to other parts of the building. They informed police and fire and rescue department personnel, who rushed to the spot. Fire and rescue department personnel began efforts to extinguish the blaze. Four fire tenders, including one from the airport, and a hydraulic fire brigade vehicle were being used in the firefighting operation. The blaze spread to an adjacent building. However, the fire in the adjacent building was extinguished. Residents the surrounding houses were evacuated. According to fire and rescue department personnel, the shop contained a batteries and other oil-like substances, which may be the reason for the fire spreading rapidly. The batteries exploded and fell on the nearby building. The rescue operations were under way. Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran, mayor R Ranganayaki and deputy police commissioner N Devanathan inspected rescue operations.
