Father-son duo killed in LPG cylinder blast in Pune | Pune News

PUNE: A father-son duo died of severe burns in a fire caused by the explosion of a domestic LPG cylinder in their house at Gokulnagar Pathar in Warje around 1:30 am on Wednesday. Warje police identified the victims as Mohan Mudawat (43) and his son Pappu Mudawat (23).
Fire brigade officials found the victims with burn injuries during an operation to douse the blaze in the house. Station Fire Officer Prabhakar Umratkar told TOI, “The house, now fully damaged, was made up of tin sheets. It was a small house, 10 x 12 sq. ft., and the two were asleep. The gas leaked, and it is not yet known how the leaked gas caught fire.”
“The two were found in an unconscious state with burn injuries in the small washroom of their house,” Umratkar said.
Their neighbour, Jayashree Sapkal, told TOI, “There was a huge blast sound in the night. We came out of our house and saw huge flames coming out of their house. All of us neighbours tried to open their doors, but they were too hot due to the fire.”
Senior Inspector Vishwajeet Kaingade of Warje police told TOI, “Pappu had gone to their native place and returned to Pune on Tuesday morning. The father-son duo worked as labourers at construction sites. Pappu’s brother works at a hotel in the city. He had a night shift and had gone to his workplace.”
“After inspecting the house following the fire, we suspect that gas leaked from the cylinder, and a short circuit in the house caused the fire,” Kaingade said. “Local residents said the father and son tried to reach the door but failed to open it because the tin door came in contact with a live power cable. When residents tried to open the door, they felt electric current. While they were trying to open it, a blast occurred in the LPG cylinder due to the heat,” he added.
The victims were moved to Sassoon General Hospital, where doctors declared them dead. Fire brigade officials said the exact cause of the gas leak was still being determined.
