65-year-old woman beaten to death over black magic suspicion in Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: A 65-year-old woman was beaten to death by five people on suspicion of practicing black magic in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.
The incident took place at Pipraha village under Kusmi police station of the district late on Thursday night.
The victim has been identified as 65-year-old Chironjiya Singh, a resident Sidhi district. Authorities confirmed her identity and stated that she was allegedly targeted due to suspicions of practicing black magic.
“The accused, who are part of the extended family of the deceased woman, used to suspect her of black magic, and they thrashed her, leading to the death of the elderly. Five accused were arrested, and a detailed investigation is going on,” sub-divisional officer of police (SDOP) Kusmi Roshni Singh Thakur told TOI.
Sources revealed that the accused—Pushpraj, Dilip, Santosh, Ajay Singh, and Indrabhan Singh—were all relatives of the deceased, belonging to her extended family. It is alleged that they suspected her of practicing black magic, which led to the brutal attack.
They came to the house of the deceased, dragged her out, and thrashed her. The family members of the deceased who came for rescue were also beaten and are undergoing treatment, added sources.
Recently, there was a death of a family member from the family of the accused, and they suspected that it was due to the black magic from the deceased woman that the death took place. Irked over it, they attacked the woman on Thursday night, leading to her death, said sources.
Black magic suspicion led to murder in Betul district last year
A 52-year-old man was killed with an axe by his cousin who suspected him of performing black magic in Betul district, as per police reports. The corpse of Balram Warkade, 52, bearing bloodstains, was found in an agricultural field at Alampur village within Chicholi police station limits on December 22, 2024. His neck was cut, and his face showed several wounds.
The police filed a case of murder and began their probe. They apprehended Radhey Shyam Barkade, 35, who lives in Alampur, on Wednesday for committing the crime.
