Edmonton Oilers’ Evander Kane had to file for bankruptcy after earning close to $55 million in NHL career as he faced $26 million in debts

Evander Kane, one of the most popular and talented players in the National Hockey League, has had a few troublesome years even though now he is in a pretty happy relationship. 2021 seemed to be a pretty difficult year for the star player as he dealt with separation from his ex wife Anna Kane and even filed bankruptcy after earning in millions.
Evander Kane Had To File For Bankruptcy Even After Earning Over $50 Million In His NHL Career
In 2021, Evander Kane had to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy in San Jose when his total debts amounted to a whopping $26.8 million. As per ESPN, according to his legal filings, the star player had claimed to lost a whopping $1.5 million in gambling at casinos.
This is not all; out of the $26.8 million debt that he had in total back in 2021, $10.2 million was stuck in assets.
As per CapFriendly, the star player had already been playing for eleven years when he filed for bankruptcy in 2021 and should have earned just a little below a whopping $55 million.
When Evander Kane filed for bankruptcy, he shocked the league and his fans as just three years prior to this incident, the San Jose Sharks signed a seven year deal with him for a whopping $49 million.
Seven months later, his ex wife, Anna Kane accused him of gambling on his hockey games, when she released a statement on Instagram. Evander Kane strongly denied any such allegations and even agreed to be investigated by the NHL.
The National Hockey League conducted their own investigation and found no evidence that could link Evander Kane to betting allegations.
But Evander Kane’s troubles did not stop there; a few months after filing for bankruptcy, he was accused of breaking COVID-19 protocols and was suspended from playing in 21 games in the 2021-22 season of NHL.
A few weeks later, in January 2022, Evander Kane’s team, the San Hose Sharks placed him on unconditional waivers and reportedly terminated his seven year contract worth $49 million.
Evander Kane then joined the Edmonton Oilers for which he still plays for.
As for the bankruptcy that he had filed in 2021, in 2023, as per the New York Times and The Athletic, the star player won a court order through which he could now erase his debts.
