GUWAHATI: The Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) on Saturday hosted a one-day conference focusing on the latest advancements in diagnosing and managing Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). This insightful event was orchestrated by the Department of Medical Oncology (Adult Hematology), with Dr. Asif Iqbal serving as the Organizing Secretary and Dr. Munlima Hazarika as the Organizing President.The conference was a melting pot of expertise, featuring distinguished speakers from prestigious institutions across India. Among them were Dr. Gaurav Prakash from PGIMER, Chandigarh, Dr. Arijit Nag from TMC, Kolkata, Dr. Uday Kulkarni from CMC, Vellore, and Drs. Gaurav Chatterjee and Lingaraj Nayak from TMH, Mumbai. They were joined by 19 esteemed faculty members from Guwahati and Shillong.Throughout the day, attendees were treated to a series of plenary talks and interactive case discussions. These sessions delved into a variety of topics, including risk stratification frameworks, cutting-edge diagnostic techniques like flow cytometry and next-generation sequencing, and the assessment of measurable residual disease. The discussions also covered novel agents, transplant strategies, and supportive care. The faculty emphasized practical approaches tailored to the Indian context, aiming to enhance early diagnosis, timely referrals, equitable access to transplants, and rational incorporation of new therapies in public and teaching hospitals.The audience, comprising 90 postgraduate delegates specializing in Hematology, Pathology, Hemato-Pathology, and Transfusion Medicine, gained valuable insights. The sessions were designed to provide clinical pearls for busy residents, everyday transfusion practices, and foster multidisciplinary coordination among clinicians, pathologists, and transfusion services.Looking ahead, BBCI plans to disseminate the key takeaways from the masterclass among teaching departments and continue similar capacity-building initiatives in the future. “The Institute also invited trainees to engage with ongoing academic activities at BBCI’s Adult Hematology services, reinforcing the message that with disciplined protocols and teamwork, outcomes in AML can steadily improve for patients across the region,” read a BBCI statement.
