Dibrugarh: As the clock struck midnight, the city of Dibrugarh resonated with the sound of bells, marking the arrival of Christmas Day. Thousands of Christians gathered in churches across the city to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with prayer, song, and community.The Sacred Heart Cathedral Catholic Church at Khalihamari was a focal point of the celebrations, with nearly 5,000 parishioners attending the midnight mass led by Bishop Albert Hemrom of the Dibrugarh Diocese. The cathedral, built in 1931 and one of the oldest in Northeast India, was filled to capacity, reflecting the deep spiritual significance of the occasion.“The inside of the church and outside was full of people,” said Fr. Cyril Purty, Parish Priest of the Sacred Heart Cathedral parish, highlighting the overwhelming turnout.The cathedral’s nativity scene, depicting the birth of Christ, was unveiled after special prayers, accompanied by the church choir’s carols. Devotees lit candles at the base of the statue of Mary, creating a sea of flickering lights. Many young mothers brought their newborns for blessings, continuing a cherished tradition.Elsewhere in the city, churches of various denominations held midnight services. The Baptist Church at Jail Road welcomed 300 attendees for a service led by Pastor CW Marak. “We celebrated the big day with prayers and carol singing,” an attendee shared, capturing the spirit of unity and joy.Other churches, including the Church of Jesus Christ at Kadamoni, Presbyterian Church of India at Paltan Bazar, and Church of North India at South Khalihamari, also hosted midnight celebrations, each featuring nativity scenes and welcoming congregations eager to mark the sacred occasion.Beyond the church walls, Christian neighborhoods in Dibrugarh became hubs of celebration. Family reunions and festive gatherings filled homes, with loved ones exchanging gifts and sharing meals, embodying the spirit of togetherness central to the Christmas message.
