Cavelossim budget backs development

Margao: At the Cavelossim gram sabha held on Sunday, several important issues were discussed, including the approval of the 2025-2026 budget. The new budget emphasises increased allocation for developmental works and community services.
During the meeting, member Jose Dcosta raised concerns about a floating vessel near Betul, citing its detrimental impact on the marine ecosystem. Sarpanch Dixon Vaz assured that appropriate authorities would be notified about this issue.
The proposed road expansion project from Velsao to Cavelossim was brought up by member Natividade Fernandes. The sarpanch clarified that no official notification was received and assured opposition to the project due to its potential impact on local housing.
Addressing the growing stray dog menace, particularly in the beach area, sarpanch Vaz said that the panchayat requested the animal welfare department to conduct a sterilisation camp following reports of dog bites.
Environmental concerns dominated the discussion, particularly on the increasing pollution in the Sal river. The presence of plastic waste and other debris in the river threatens both tourism and local fishing activities, gram sabha members said.
The sarpanch appealed to the residents to preserve local identity by selling properties, if need be, only to fellow Goans rather than non-locals.
