NEW DELHI: Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghish on Friday married party women’s wing leader Rinku Majumdar. The photos from their intimate marriage ceremony quickly went viral on social media.
The private ceremony took place at the former state unit president and ex-Lok Sabha MP’s residence in Kolkata. A larger reception is reportedly planned later in his hometown, Kharagpur.
The 60-year-old Ghosh had remained unmarried till now. Ghosh, a lifelong RSS worker who was deputed to BJP in 2014. Party insiders said many leaders were caught off guard by the timing of his decision, especially with Ghosh reportedly in the race to become state BJP chief again.
Ghosh, who led the party during its peak performance in Bengal in 2019, winning 18 of 42 Lok Sabha seats, lost this year from Bardhaman-Durgapur after being shifted from his stronghold of Midnapore. Party sources say Ghosh first met Majumdar during his tenure as state BJP president, when she was active in Kolkata South’s organisational work. She has since been a close associate, especially during politically turbulent times.
Majumdar, who has a 26-year-old son from a previous marriage, acknowledged congratulatory messages from reporters on Thursday, saying she would speak publicly on Sunday.
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh extended personal wishes via social media, urging others not to politicise the union.
Ghosh’s family, including his ailing mother, is said to be supportive of the marriage. Known for his fiery rhetoric and hardline RSS roots, Ghosh began his political career in the Sangh Parivar, serving in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands before joining active politics. His first electoral win came in 2016, when he defeated veteran Congress leader Gyan Singh Sohanpal in Kharagpur.
