Alexander Volkanovski is all prepared to face Diego Lopes at UFC 314 for the vacant featherweight title after losing it to Ilia Topuria at UFC 298. Prior to his bout on April 12, Volkanovski sits down with Niko Pajarillo of Fox Sports Australia and talks about his upcoming fixture at UFC 314 and his relationship with Lopes, his matchups against Islam Makhachev, a potential bout against Movsar Evloev and a rematch with rival Ilia Topuria. Amidst all this, the Giant also mentioned the only fighter who can match up to him for five rounds, Islam Makhachev.
Alexander Volkanovski believes that a perfect fight for Diego Lopes might not work in the upcoming bout
Alexander Volkanovski, in his interview, talked about the amount of self-confidence he has in himself. He believes that the only way for other fighters to win against him is to “punch their chance” with him.
“I don’t believe anyone can beat me. The only person that I can see giving me a tough fight for five rounds is Islam Makhachev, as in the first one, as you’ve seen. Everyone else has just got a puncher’s chance.” The fighter stated. “That’s just how I always look at it. I truly believe that, and that’s the confidence I have in myself. No one can beat me.”
The giant went on to explain the strategy that Diego Lopes might have to adopt during their bout, “They can catch me, so I think he needs to be reckless to beat me. If he tries to fight this perfect fight, it’s not going to work. He needs to try and be reckless and catch me. That’s his best chance, so he’s going to do what we all know he’s going to do and what he’s been doing, which is exciting for the fans, but it opens a lot of doors for me. … (There’s) a lot I can capitalize on and that I will capitalize on.”
Volkanovski talks about his relationship with Lopes on a personal level. They have shared a good bond in the past and look forward to maintaining the same, even after the bout at UFC 314.
“He is a good dude man. We have been getting along for a while now. I have chatted to him before…He is a good dude, respectful guy”
The warm attitude between the fighters was also reflected on the media day of UFC 314, when Volkanovski sang a song for his opponent.
