After months of dust clouds, finally revamp for SPR in Gurgaon | Gurgaon News

Gurgaon: Commuters battling potholes and dust on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) may finally see some relief, with GMDA set to allot revamp work for the 5.5km-long stretch.
At a review meeting, chaired by Haryana’s principal advisor for urban development DS Dhesi on Tuesday, officials confirmed the work will be allotted this week. GMDA hopes to complete the work before monsoon.
The authority had invited bids in Dec last year for strengthening and repairing of SPR from Vatika Chowk to NH-8 at an estimated cost of Rs 9.6 crore.
However, the process was stalled as the civic polls put all new projects on hold. With election results slated for Wednesday, GMDA is now gearing up to resume work on this crucial stretch.
“With conclusion of civic polls, the authority is moving forward with the special repairs of SPR. The work will be allotted within this week and the agency has been directed to mobilise resources immediately to start the special repair work. We are hoping to complete it before the upcoming monsoon season,” a senior GMDA official said.
While GMDA completed repairs from Ghata village to Vatika Chowk in March last year, this 5.5km cratered section remained unaddressed, leading to worsening traffic congestion and safety hazards. This vital corridor — serving as a link to sectors 48 and 69-80 and other residential and commercial areas — has deteriorated significantly, developing extensive surface damage such as deep craters, potholes and widespread cracks.
The poor condition of the road has had fatal consequences. In Dec last year, a motorcyclist lost control after hitting a pothole and was fatally struck by a truck. The fatality prompted Gurgaon traffic police to formally request urgent repairs, citing rising safety concerns. Earlier in Oct, the Haryana State Pollution Control Board issued a show-cause notice to GMDA for failing to implement adequate dust control measures on the road.
Beyond the immediate repairs, GMDA is also engaging a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report for a more extensive SPR upgrade. The redevelopment of SPR has been in the pipeline since 2019. However, several revisions over the years delayed the execution. The initial plan was to revamp a 14km stretch of SPR from Ghata T-point to NH-8 by building eight flyovers, widening carriageways to six lanes and adding service lanes — all for Rs 845.5 crore.
However, concerns were raised about the need to build three flyovers between Vatika Chowk and NH-8, given that the traffic volume wasn’t too high on the stretch.
Eventually, the govt approved a 5.5km signal-free elevated corridor from Vatika Chowk to the CPR-SPR junction on NH-48 last year, ensuring a seamless connection from Shiv Murti in Delhi to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
“The authority will allot the work this week to the consultant for preparation of the DPR and the tender for this project will be invited by Aug,” the official said.
Dhesi said the SPR upgrade and proposed interchange at Vatika Chowk will significantly decongest key junctions. “Once completed, this project will provide high-speed, seamless connectivity between the newly constructed Dwarka Expressway, NH-48 and the Gurgaon-Sohna elevated corridor. The interchange at Vatika Chowk will also offer a connection between SPR and the Gurgaon-Sohna Expressway, reducing traffic at Vatika Chowk, Subhash Chowk and the service roads of the Gurgaon-Sohna Highway,” he said.
