3 houses gutted in Cachar blaze, losses around Rs 30 lakh: Officials

Silchar: A fire that broke out late Sunday night reduced three houses to ashes at Chandinagar in the Katigorah circle of Cachar district, near the India-Bangladesh border, leaving three families homeless and causing losses estimated at around Rs 30 lakh, officials and locals said.According to preliminary findings, the blaze is suspected to have originated from an electrical short circuit in one of the houses. The fire quickly spread, engulfing the homes of Abdul Hamid Laskar, Abdul Gafur Laskar and Abdul Mukit Laskar. The inferno destroyed large quantities of stored rice, cash, furniture, important documents and other household essentials, the affected families said.Residents alleged that fire tenders from Kalain, Katigorah and Badarpur reached the spot nearly one-and-a-half hours after the incident was reported. By then, the houses had already been completely gutted. The delay triggered anger among villagers, who said timely intervention could have reduced the extent of the damage.Police personnel also rushed to the area to assess the situation and maintain order. No casualties were reported. An official inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the fire, authorities said.
