Sanjay Mishra admits being typecast in comedy irritates him: ‘But at least there was work’

Actor Sanjay Mishra has carved a distinctive space for himself in Hindi cinema with his impeccable comic timing across a wide range of films. However, despite having taken on several intense and dramatic roles over the past three decades, the actor admits that he has often been boxed into playing comic characters and that irritates him sometimes. Mishra compared his creative choices to the art of cooking, stressing that every dish or role requires only what truly fits, without excess.Reflecting on how producers tend to approach him based on his past successes, the seasoned actor said in an interview with ANI, “You have to typecast, boss. You keep spices in the kitchen, right? If you are making something which doesn’t require sugar, then you won’t add sugar or something like that. Producers really liked it. Boss, it’s comedy, Sanjay Mishra will do it in one take. Call him.”While he acknowledged that repeatedly being offered similar roles did frustrate him, Mishra also pointed out the practical realities of the industry. “I get irritated, but at least there was work when I had nothing. So, this is also the situation,” he said.A graduate of the National School of Drama (NSD), Sanjay Mishra made his acting debut in 1995 with Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Oh Darling! Yeh Hai India!’. He went on to appear in supporting roles in films such as ‘Satya’ and ‘Dil Se’. Wider recognition followed when his character Apple Singh, created for the promotions of the 1999 Cricket World Cup, struck a chord with audiences. That popularity soon translated into a string of comedy roles in films like ‘Golmaal’, ‘Dhamaal’, ‘All the Best’ and ‘Phas Gaye Re Obama’. He also got a lot of love for ‘Aankhon Dekhi’. The actor will be seen next in ‘Vadh 2’ with Neena Gupta.
