The cult comedy ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ is remembered for its quirky humour and brilliant performances, but not many know that behind the scenes, things weren’t as cheerful, especially between leading ladies Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor. While the film gave fans plenty of laughs, there was a cold war going on that even made the director, Rajkumar Santoshi, take some drastic steps.
Cold vibes on a comedy set
Back in the 90s, gossip magazines had a field day reporting on the tension between Raveena and Karisma during the shoot of ‘Andaz Apna Apna’. Rumours of hair-pulling and catfights made headlines, giving the impression that the set was full of drama, not just comedy.
Director Rajkumar Santoshi clearly, had enough of the cold shoulder between the two. So when the time came to shoot the climax, where both actresses were tied to a pillar, he saw it as the perfect chance to get them to talk. In an interview with Radio Nasha, Priti Sinha, daughter of the late producer Vinay Sinha, shared what happened on set: “They were tied together for the climax. When the dinner break started, someone said, ‘Untie them.’ Raj ji said, ‘No one will untie them. First, ask them to sort it out among themselves and start talking to each other. Because itna masti ka mahaul hai (it’s a set full of joy), just these two are not talking to each other.’”
Her sister Namrata added, “They were not on talking terms… this happens between all actors.”
Priti continued, “I think they sorted it out. They shook hands and sorted it out. They were very young. Everybody was very young.”

No hair-pulling, just silence
Over the years, reports had claimed that Karisma and Raveena’s cold war got physical, even suggesting they pulled each other’s hair. However, in the same Radio Nasha interview, the Sinha family strongly denied those claims. “No no, not at all. Aisa kuchh nahi tha (that wasn’t the case),” said Namrata.
“See, they just wouldn’t talk to each other. But nothing physical ever happened,” clarified Priti.

Karisma and Raveena: Not just one feud?
Interestingly, this wasn’t the only time people noticed tension between the two actresses. On an episode of Koffee With Karan in 2007, choreographer Farah Khan recalled a wild memory from the shoot of the film ‘Aatish’, calling it the worst fight she had ever seen between co-stars. “I was once doing a song with Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon, long ago, in a film called ‘Aatish’. They were both having some kind of teenage spat. They were hitting each other with their wigs,” Farah said.
“One was hitting, the other was stamping her foot with her heel. It was quite childish. I am sure they will laugh about it now.”
