‘Jana Nayagan’ censor issue: All about Thalapathy Vijay’s last film controversy, A timeline of censor battle |
Of late, there has been a cloud of uncertainty hanging over ‘Jana Nayagan’ due to the film’s censor certificate that is still pending with just a few days to go for its January 9 release. This delay has adversely affected the film’s advance bookings in the country, including Tamil Nadu, where tickets have not opened on a large scale. Considering that ‘Jana Nayagan’ is being marketed as Thalapathy Vijay’s last film before he dives headlong into politics now, the film’s anticipation levels are raised, which further elevates the importance of the censor delay. There are a lot of theories, however neither of them are confirmed.
How the issue began: From smooth screening to sudden silence
The timeline of events goes back to December 19 when Central Board of Film Certification screened the film. As per News 18, the screening committee made a few suggestions on cuts and verbally assured that the film would be granted a U/A certificate. This assurance remained in place till December 22. The producers made the changes and submitted the movie again by December 24, expecting a quick release. However, with December 25 being Christmas, the communication got delayed, and from December 26, the producers began a constant wait for the certificate, which turned out to be nothing but silence.
Referral to the revising committee sparks legal battle
The turn of events was unexpected as on January 5, the film was reportedly sent to the Revising Committee on the grounds of “religious sentiments” and the portrayal of defence forces. The Regional Censor Office further muddied the waters by directing the producers to contact its Mumbai branch. The advance sales had been stopped and the international promotion had begun. Therefore, the producers filed a petition with the Madras High Court on January 6, seeking a directive from the court to issue the censor certificate. Justice P.T. Asha heard the petition and instructed the CBFC to present all concerned records. The matter was scheduled for a hearing and adjourned for a detailed hearing on January 7.
January 7 hearing puts release on edge
According to Live Law India, during the hearing on January 7, arguments were intense, with the CBFC defending the review order as the producers questioned the timing after all the mandatory cuts had been accomplished. The court has reserved the order, and a decision will likely be pronounced on January 9, which is the date of the film’s release. The producers are, however, hopeful that the certificate by 8th will suffice, but a delay would jeopardize the film’s screening in cineplexes. The ‘Jana Nayagan’ film is at the brink, awaiting the court’s judgment.
