Three die after boat capsizes in Motihari

Patna: Three people died after a boat carrying 15 people capsized in Sikrahana river at Motihari in East Champaran district on Saturday night.The victims have been identified as Kailash Sahni (50), Mukesh Kumar (25) and Babulal Sahni (45).The accident occurred when the villagers were returning with fodder for their cattle on the boat on Saturday night. A strong wind hit the overloaded boat, causing it to overturn midstream near Purpubari Tola Sareh under Lakhaura police station area.Local residents quickly launched a rescue operation and managed to save 12 people, who were rushed to a nearby hospital. Police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams also assisted the local people in the search operation. Strong water current hampered the rescue work, however, 12 people could be saved.Chief minister Nitish Kumar expressed condolence over the deaths.Motihari circle officer (CO), Sandhya Kumari, said: “Cheques worth Rs 4 lakh each will be given as compensation to the families of the deceased. The boat capsized due to multiple factors including overloading, strong winds and current of the water. The NDRF team has been instructed to continue patrolling in the area.”
