Sandbar formation near Bogibeel bridge main cause of erosion in Dibrugarh: Hazarika | Guwahati News

Dibrugarh: Water resources minister Pijush Hazarika on Wednesday identified formation of large sandbars near the Bogibeel bridge as the primary cause of erosion, which led to a large land tract, including a yoga centre and a playground, getting submerged in the Brahmaputra river.Hazarika, accompanied by power minister and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, and engineers from the water resources department surveyed the affected sites and the Bogibeel bridge area to assess the situation.“The sandbars that have formed near the Bogibeel bridge have been identified as one of the primary causes of erosion in Dibrugarh. The sandbars will have to be dredged to resolve this critical problem. Dredging operations will be carried out soon,” Hazarika said after the inspection. The process aims to remove the sediment build-up, potentially redirecting the main channel of the river and alleviating pressure on the eroding banks.“Due to the main channel flowing near the southern bank, significant sandbars have accumulated toward the northern bank at many points. Consequently, the southern bank of the Brahmaputra is experiencing severe erosion problems at several locations in the upper reaches of Dibrugarh town,” Hazarika said. The minister stressed the govt’s commitment to finding a comprehensive solution to protect Dibrugarh from further erosion damage. “Today, along with Prasanta Phukan, I assessed this problem in the presence of the executive engineer of the water resources department, starting from the Bogibeel bridge area. Necessary measures to solve this problem will be discussed in detail with departmental specialists and concerned officials,” he said.
