Boston Red Sox: Rafael Devers races against time to reclaim Red Sox third base spot as opening day approaches

With Opening Day looming, Rafael Devers is struggling to get his third-base position back for the Boston Red Sox. Having played through shoulder injuries last year, Devers continues to build up his preparation with new signing Alex Bregman already receiving game reps at third. With the clock ticking, Devers needs to show that he’s fit to play and retain his spot.

Rafael Devers pushing to be game-ready for Opening Day

Devers has been behind his teammates in spring training, continuing to recover from persistent shoulder injuries that hampered his play in late 2024. Manager Alex Cora gave an update on his status.
“He’s hitting off the Trajekt (pitching machine), which is great. Today is the first day on the field. We had live BPs, he’s probably tracking there. He’ll let us know. He took grounders this morning with Flo (infield coach José Flores). Threw to first base. He’s getting there. But not 100%.”
While Devers is logging live batting practice, he hasn’t played in a spring training game yet, setting him back from Bregman.
With Opening Day scheduled for March 27, Devers must get live at-bats and defensive reps in order to demonstrate to the club that he is prepared. His offensive prowess and defensive dependability will go a long way in deciding if he retains third base or relinquishes the position to Bregman.

Red Sox have a difficult choice at third base

As Devers works his way back, Bregman has already been written into the third base role in Grapefruit League games. The former Houston Astros star signed with Boston over the offseason and is viewed as a possible replacement if Devers isn’t game-ready.
Devers, a two-time All-Star and one of the Red Sox’ cornerstone hitters, has said he wants to remain at third base, but his late return might prompt the team to make a difficult decision. If Bregman is solid with the glove and Devers is not yet fully up to speed, Boston might go for a position change.
With fewer than a few weeks remaining until Opening Day, Devers doesn’t have much time to demonstrate that he is physically ready. His offensive punch is still important to the Red Sox, but whether he can play third base defensively will decide his place in the order.
As the competition with Bregman heats up, all eyes will be on Devers to see if he can reclaim his position and be ready to lead Boston when the season begins.
