Now, waste corp to set up manned garbage deposit centres to collect segregated trash | Goa News

Panaji: With the increase in black spots on national highways, major district roads, and state highways, Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has decided to establish manned waste deposit centres at prime locations to collect segregated waste and keep the state clean.GWMC also decided to deploy quick response teams (QRT) to remove the black spots. A senior official said that if mixed waste is brought to the manned centre, it will not be collected. “Only segregated waste will be collected at manned centres,” said a senior officer.GWMC noticed that people leave their homes and on the way to their workplace carry mixed waste, including wet and dry, in one bag, and throw it along the roadside. GWMC has also observed that people often throw garbage from flyovers.“We will deploy QRTs for waste collection at identified black spots. Additionally, GWMC will establish manned waste deposit centres at prime locations to address the issue of black spots, and to minimise littering,” a senior official said.GWMC has also said that it has identified a designated site for the disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) waste at Tuem. Chief minister Pramod Sawant directed that all govt agencies involved in the execution of works shall mandatorily deposit C&D waste at the designated site in Tuem.GWMC is managing various waste management initiatives across Goa, including the processing of 350 metric tonnes (MT) of solid waste daily at solid waste management facilities (SWMFs), secondary waste collection from village panchayats and educational institutions, transportation of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for co-processing from various local bodies, and waste collection along highways and major district roads.In addition, GWMC carries out information, education, and communication (IEC) activities and provides technical support to local bodies and other stakeholders.In carrying out these responsibilities, GWMC incurs costs that should be accounted for by the respective waste generators and stakeholders, it said. “In view of this, there is a need to formulate a policy to enable the receipt of funds directly from the directorate of panchayats (DoP), directorate of municipal administration (DMA), and other relevant agencies for the waste management services provided by GWMC,” a senior official said.
