Kolkata law student ‘gang-rape’ case: DNA samples, survivor’s clothes, accused’s outfits and hockey stick recovered; call records, CCTV footage under lens | Kolkata News
KOLKATA: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the law college gang rape finished gathering almost all the key physical evidence by Sunday. This includes the DNA samples of the three accused, the hockey stick with which the rape survivor was thrashed, and the clothes the woman and the accused wore during the incident on Wednesday evening.According to the woman’s complaint, while the prime accused, Monojit Mishra, was raping her, she suffered an injury on her head. Despite pleas that she was hurt, he did not stop. In her complaint, the survivor wrote: “He went on raping me… After a while, I stopped fighting back so that I could get out of the room. He also tried to hit me with a hockey stick. I just lay like a dead body.”
It is this hockey stick that is now in the possession of the SIT. Investigators and forensic officials have collected hair strands from the guard room alongside other proof of resistance by the survivor. The initial findings of the SIT, including the review of the CCTV footage, corroborated the claims made by the woman in her complaint.The team, led by an assistant commissioner and now expanded to nine members with the addition of four sub-inspectors – including a woman officer – visited the homes of all three accused to gather further evidence. On Saturday, they seized a set of clothes from Monojit’s Kalighat home: a red kurta and brown trousers with six pockets, and a pair of black shorts. Officers said he was wearing these clothes during the crime.On Sunday, the team collected the clothes worn by Monojit’s accomplices, Zaib Ahmed (from his Tiljala home) and Pramit Mukherjee (from his Howrah home). “The clothes will serve as forensic evidence in the case,” said an officer.
Lens on phone call details of 3 accused
An officer said : “The colour of the clothes was observed earlier through CCTV footage and has been matched with those that have been collected.”Although cops have already recovered two videos from Monojit’s phone in which the crime was recorded, recovery of crucial forensic evidence from the clothes and crime scene would further bolster the case. “Mishra’s mobile that contained recordings of the entire crime combined with forensic reports will form the backbone of this case. We have carefully collected all samples from two crime scenes,” he added.He said phone call details of three accused are now under lens, with cops requesting call details of those numbers from service provider. Cops have also said CCTV footage that confirmed visuals of the woman being dragged into the guard room will also be sent for forensic tests.
Cops said they have found three benches stacked at guard room together to give it the form of a bed, where the crime is likely to have taken place. They have also collected samples that look like blood stains at the corner of one of the benches. Cops are inquiring about which students were present in the college from noon to night on that day. A detailed list of 25 students has been requested from the college. A relative of the girl said the family was satisfied with police probe. Cops said they have submitted an application seeking to record her parents’ confidential statement before the magistrate.
