Ed Sheeran surprised his fans at his Bengaluru gig when he performed the Telugu song Chuttamalle from the film Devara.
The British singer-songwriter, who has been in India, for the past couple of weeks, has been immersing himself in the desi vibes. After learning to stum the sitar, the singer tried to pick up some Telugu while he was in the state. For last evening’s concert, he invited renowned Indian playback singer Shilpa Rao to join him to sing a cover of Chuttamalle, the hit song from the Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor starrer ‘Devara’.
The duo’s performance, which quickly went viral on social media, won hearts, with fans praising Sheeran for his effort to embrace Indian music and culture. Fans were thrilled to witness the singer crooning in Telugu, after previously trying to sing in Punjabi last year.
Sheeran, later took to his handle to share a BTS video of himself learning how to pronounce the Telugu words with Shilpa doubling up as his dialect coach. Penning a heartfelt post for Shilpa, he said, “Obsessed with @shilparao’s voice for the last while, a real privilege to share the stage tonight, and learn a new language!”
The performance was part of Sheeran’s ongoing Mathematics Tour, which has drawn massive crowds across the country. He has already performed in Hyderabad and Chennai. During his Chennai concert, he was joined on stage by legendary composer AR Rahman. The two performed a rendition of the classic song Urvashi. He will also perform in Shillong and Delhi NCR in the coming days.
The singer was in the news on Sunday after his street performance was stopped by the Bengaluru police. He later shared a clarification on the abrupt end to the gig, sharing that he had prior permission to perform at Church Street.
The singer took to his Instagram story to share a short statement where he wrote that they had “permission to busk” and that it was not just him “randomly turning up.”
“We had permission to busk, by the way. Hence, us playing in that exact spot was planned out beforehand. It wasn’t just us randomly turning up. All good though. See you at the show tonight x,” Sheeran wrote.
