Bangladeshi actress Meher Afroz Shaon detained for questioning on anti-state charges - Report

Meher Afroz Shaon, a celebrated Bangladeshi actress and National Film Award-winning playback singer, was detained by the Detective Branch of Bangladesh Police on charges of conspiring against the state. Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mollick confirmed the detention, stating that she was taken in for questioning based on undisclosed information. “We have not taken any decision on arresting her yet,” he told ANI.
Shaon, known for her role in ‘Krishnopokkho’ (2016) and as the wife of late writer-director Humayun Ahmed, is also a director and playback singer. She has been critical of Bangladesh’s interim government on social media, which some believe could have led to her detention.
Her political connections have added complexity to the situation. Shaon’s father, Engineer Mohammad Ali, is a senior Awami League leader, and her mother served as a Member of Parliament for the same party. Speculations suggest her ties to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and outspoken remarks against the current administration, led by Muhammad Yunus, may have made her a political target. The detention comes amid heightened unrest in Bangladesh, with protests leading to attacks on properties of Awami League leaders. In Dhaka’s Banani area, protesters set fire to the residence of Sheikh Selim, a senior Awami League member. Murals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were destroyed in several districts. Protesters also targeted Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader’s residence in Noakhali’s Companiganj, according to media reports.
As the investigation unfolds, Shaon’s detention continues to stir controversy amid an already volatile political climate in Bangladesh.
