Man flashes at Czech woman near Taj Mahal, held

AGRA: A 23-year-old salesman in Agra was arrested for allegedly flashing and passing lewd remarks at a 30-year-old female tourist from Czech Republic near the Taj Mahal, police said on Sunday.
Police added that the accused, Karan Rathore, who was later identified through CCTV footage, “came very close to her and started sexually harassing her”, before fleeing from the spot.
The incident took place between 1pm and 2pm on April 3 when the woman, while exploring the city on foot, reached a secluded stretch that connects the Taj Mahal’s West Gate parking to Agra Fort.
The next day, around 9pm, she filed a written complaint at the tourist police station and based on that, an FIR was registered against Rathore under BNS sections 75 (1) (sexual harassment) and 78 (stalking). Rathore works as a salesman near the Taj Mahal complex.
He was arrested from Tajganj on Saturday night and sent to jail after appearing before court on Sunday, police said, adding that embassy officials hadn’t been notified yet as the victim had already left the city.
In her complaint, the woman, who was staying at a homestay, stated that she was walking near the Taj Mahal complex when the accused started flashing and then passed lewd remarks. She returned to the homestay and informed its manager who helped her to lodge a police complaint.
ACP (Taj security) Syed Areeb Ahmed said, “It was probably her maiden India visit. She could not speak fluently in English and was using a translator app to communicate. We recorded her statement in court and conducted routine medical tests…. I also personally apologised to her and asked her to remain in touch with Agra police. She has promised to visit Agra in future.”
(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
