Minecraft, the iconic sandbox game has captivated millions of fans since its release and recently Mojang Studios celebrated the game’s 15th anniversary. Despite its enduring success and age, the developer made it clear that there is no sequel in the works. The idea was further dismissed by the executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, Ingela Garneji, in an interview with IGN in a playful yet firm response.

Mojang Studios is not planning a Minecraft sequel

During a recent visit to the Stockholm studio of Mojang, when IGN asked about the possibility of a follow-up to the best-selling Minecraft, Ingela Garneji gave a firm response. She dismissed the rumors of Minecraft 2 with her words, showing the stance of the studio to be clear— Minecraft is an evolving and living game that doesn’t need a sequel to be relevant.
“Do you think we’re going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there’s no Minecraft 2,” said Garneji.
Instead of developing the follow-up, Mojang Studios is more focused on expanding the original game lifespan for the upcoming years.
Garneji ensured to emphasize the long-term vision of the team, as she stated, “We’ve existed for 15 years. We want to exist at least 15 years more.”
Alongside Agnes Larsson, the game director, Garneji is shaping Minecraft’s future with innovations and continuous updates. As per the team, there is no need for a full-fledged sequel.
However, the aging tech of the game presents challenges. Garneji admitted that the 15-year-old Minecraft engine could slow down development, making it harder to implement new features compared to modern games with newer engines.
“It’s a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense,” she explained.
Despite the challenges, Mojang Studios is committed to improving gameplay. One of the upcoming updates, like the Vibrant Visuals, aiming to enhance the game’s graphics, is a testament to the studios’ commitment to overcoming concerns for the loyal fans.

No plans for AI integration or free play access

It’s been confirmed by Mojang that Minecraft will not be transitioning to the free-to-play model. It will also not incorporate generative AI. Instead, the studio remains dedicated to refining existing experiences while they work on preserving the game’s core identity.
With over 300 million sold copies of Minecraft, the game today is a cultural phenomenon. While the fans should not expect the sequel, the evolution of the original game is far from over. It’s proof that, at times, the best means to look forward is to keep building on what is already working.
