On-duty ASI police dies after being hit by speeding bike in Delhi's Burari

NEW DELHI: An on-duty assistant sub-inspector, who was inspecting the scene of an accident, died after being hit by a bike in North Delhi’s Burari on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Satyavir Singh, who was posted at the Burari police station.
According to police, Singh was responding to a PCR call about an accident at 1 am on Thursday, involving a truck that hit a car and a traffic police personnel, ASI Pradeep, on Outer Ring Road near the Burari flyover.
“While inspecting the scene, a speeding bike hit him, injuring him. He was rushed to a hospital in Shalimar Bagh, where he passed away during treatment,” police said.
The biker also fell, sustained injuries, and was taken to hospital. He is being tracked, and the bike was recovered from the spot. Police said the driver of the car, which was hit by the truck, suffered two injuries—first from the truck and then from the bike that struck the ASI. The truck driver was apprehended.
Singh, an ASI from the 1989 batch, was set to retire in 2028. He is survived by his wife, son, and specially-abled daughter. His body was sent for a post-mortem examination.
DCP (North) Raja Banthia said the district police are extending all possible help to the bereaved family. A case has been registered.
Last year, on 18 September, sub-inspector Ganga Sharan lost his life while carrying out his duties. During a routine night patrol in East Delhi’s Pandav Nagar, he was struck and killed by a speeding car while inspecting another vehicle.
Up until November last year, 14 police personnel—five constables, two head constables, three assistant sub-inspectors, two sub-inspectors, and two inspectors—lost their lives in the line of duty. In total, 19 personnel died last year, including seven head constables, six ASIs, four SIs, one inspector, and one multitasking staff member. The toll rises to 51 when the 18 casualties from 2022 are included.
