‘Zootopia 2’ overtakes ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to become highest-earning Hollywood release in China with USD 630 Million haul |
The animated film ‘Zootopia 2’ has hit a major milestone at the Chinese box office. The film, which was released in theatres worldwide on November 28, has emerged as the highest-grossing Hollywood film in China. With a total collection of USD 630 million, the film has now officially surpassed the long-held record of the Marvel superhero film ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to claim the top spot. The updated box office collection was shared on Deadline, after Disney’s executive disclosed its fiscal first-quarter earnings report. While the animated sequel had already been recognised as the top-performing US title in China, the studio had not previously revealed the total box office haul that helped it take down the ‘Avengers’ film to take the box office throne. ‘Zootopia 2’ made waves in the Chinese markets, with the film earning over an estimated USD 400 million in days following its release. The film became increasingly popular in the region, with theatres hosting special pet-friendly screenings. Videos soon went viral of pet owners taking their dogs and cats to the cinema halls to watch the animated movie. Globally, the sequel has amassed nearly USD 1.8 billion at the box office, placing it among the top 10 highest-grossing films worldwide. While it is one of the highest earning films of the year, ‘Zootopia 2’ could not outperform the Chinese blockbuster animated film ‘Ne Zha 2’, which grossed USD 2.12 billion by the end of 2025. The Hollywood flick is also now only the third production of 2025 to help the studio score a billion-dollar hit at the box office. It joins ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch’ as the hits to cross USD 1 billion. Meanwhile, with awards season on in full swing, ‘Zootopia 2’ has been picking up nominations in the Best Animated Film category. The film has also scored an Oscar nomination. ‘Ne Zha 2’, on the other hand, has been snubbed at major Hollywood awards shows despite its huge success at the worldwide box office.
