Harry Potter series: Cast, seasons, runtime, director, release date, and everything you need to know
Harry Potter is coming back, but not the way you remember. Instead of another round of movies, we’re getting a full-on TV series—something big, detailed, and, honestly, overdue. The OTT platform behind it is promising to go deeper into J.K. Rowling’s world than the films ever did. It’s been over ten years since the last movie, but now, with a new cast and more time to tell the story, the magic is set to feel brand new.
‘Harry Potter’ as a series: All you need to know
What’s the deal with the Harry Potter TV series? One of the biggest streaming platforms is adapting all seven books, starting with ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ and following Harry and his friends through every year at Hogwarts. Instead of cramming the story into a two-hour film, they’re giving each book its own season. That means more time for every twist, every friendship, every bit of magic fans have always wanted to see. For longtime fans, it’s a chance to actually live at Hogwarts again. For newcomers, it’s a fresh way into the wizarding world, with every character and plotline getting the care they deserve. They’re planning seven seasons, one for each book. That’s Harry’s first steps in the castle, all the way to his final battle with Voldemort—spread out over years so you can really grow with the story. Reportedly, the whole project might span a decade, which fits. Harry didn’t become ‘The Boy Who Lived’ in a weekend. The first season? It’s set to have eight episodes, all based on Philosopher’s Stone. Although the runtimes of the episodes aren’t locked in yet, keeping up with their tradition, we can expect each episode to run around 50 to 70 minutes. That’s enough time to really get into the details that the movies had to skip for time crunches.
More about cast and crew
Who all are helming this series with high stakes and expectations? Francesca Gardiner, who worked on ‘Succession’, is running the show. Mark Mylod, too, is directing and producing along with her. More importantly, J.K. Rowling—the creator of Harry Potter and the Wizarding World—is still involved. Now, let’s talk cast. This might be a bummer for some fans, but the Harry Potter series, of course, isn’t a reunion. Rather, the show’s bringing in a new group to play the Hogwarts crew from scratch. So far, we know, Dominic McLaughlin is stepping in as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron. Nick Frost is playing Hagrid, and John Lithgow is taking on Dumbledore. Paapa Essiedu is Snape, and Janet McTeer is McGonagall.Apart from these confirmed casts, ‘Peaky Blinders’ fame Cillian Murphy is rumored to play the character of the Dark Lord, Voldemort. Ralph Fiennes, who played him in the movies, even said on the red carpet of ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ just last month that Murphy’s a “very good choice,” though he seemed a bit caught off guard about the whole thing. When asked, “Who do you think should fill your shoes for Voldemort in the upcoming show?”, in a viral TikTok clip shared by Let’s Talk Film, Fiennes responded: “I’m told they are already filled, aren’t they? I think Cillian Murphy is very good.”
Release date and how to watch
Earlier, the Harry Potter series was supposed to land sometime in 2026. However, as of now, it’s been slightly delayed. Although the exact date hasn’t been announced yet, the series is now slated to drop in early 2027 on HBO and HBO Max.
